Have you ever felt embarrassed taking off your shoes because of how your feet might smell? Foot odor happens to the best of us. Especially when you wear shoes with poor ventilation, such as sneakers, rain boots, or snow boots. Foot odor can be a very sensitive topic and many people are embarrassed about it. Foot odors can be managed and treated at home to a certain extent. With proper care, foot odor can be diminished.

Check out our previous blog post on 5 Causes of Foot Odor for more information on WHY you have foot odor.

1. Wear ventilated shoes

One of the main causes of foot odor is wearing shoes that are poorly ventilated. Your best bet is to wear more breathable shoes. It will help eliminate foot odor if you air out your feet to prevent sweat or moisture from accumulating. Another effective way is to use a deodorant that can be used on shoes.

2. Wear cotton socks

Wear socks that can better absorb sweat or moisture from your feet. The best material to wear is cotton, as they work well at absorbing any type of moisture. Another recommendation is If your feet sweat a lot, prepare extra socks, and change them as needed. This can help with controlling how much sweat and moisture accumulate on your feet.

3. Clean your feet daily

Cleaning your feet daily can lead to better skin health, which will help with preventing odors. Many people wash their feet with soap daily, but that alone is not enough. This is because microorganisms can stay on your feet which leads to foot odor.

Also, getting routine pedicures can be helpful. During a pedicure (if done correctly), it can remove dead skin cells. Bacteria and fungi that live on our feet feed off old dead skin cells as nutrients to multiply, which is an important factor in foot odor.

4. Manage your eating habits

When it comes to foot odor, eating habits also play an important role. Spicy or hot foods can increase sweating, so reducing these foods can help reduce foot odor.

5. Visit a doctor for infectious disease

A typical infectious disease caused by fungal infection is athlete's foot. The fungus that causes athlete's foot is the reason for foot odor. If you experience itchiness, peeling, or odor between your toes, it may be because of athlete's foot. The recommended way to treat an athlete’s foot is to pay a visit to the doctor’s office.
