Summer is the season of sandals and bare feet—and arguably the most challenging time of year for foot health.

High heat, humidity, sweat, friction, and UV exposure all take a toll, often leading to odor, athlete’s foot, dryness, calluses, and cracking.

To wear your sandals with confidence—and more importantly, to protect your hygiene and foot health—here’s a smart foot care routine you can start today.

1. Maintaining Cleanliness is the Foundation of Foot Care

Summer foot health starts with a daily hygiene routine. After being outside, thoroughly wash your feet with lukewarm water and mild soap, making sure to clean between your toes. Dry completely with a towel or with cool-air dryer to prevent the growth of athlete’s foot fungi. Using a foot-specific soap is especially effective, as its antibacterial and deodorizing properties help prevent odor and infections.

On days when you sweat a lot, use foot powder or foot deodorant to control both moisture and odor. Wearing breathable shoes and cotton socks is also important. Additionally, rotating your shoes and drying them in the sun helps maintain foot hygiene.

All US Crystal foot care products contain Zinc Ricinoleate, which effectively absorbs and neutralizes unpleasant odors from the feet. With global interest in hygiene and sterilization increasing, US Crystal was the first to actively incorporate antibacterial properties into spa products. Ingredients such as Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, and Propolis extracts, along with Benzalkonium Chloride, are included to provide safe and effective antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial benefits for legs and feet.

2. Exfoliating and Callus Care are Must-Have Routines

During the summer, there tends to be more exposure to sandals and bare feet which can easily result in heel calluses and rough foot skin. Therefore, regular exfoliation and moisturization are essential for maintaining healthy summer feet.

After a shower or foot soak—when the feet are fully softened—gently exfoliate dead skin using a scrub or foot file 1–2 times per week. For thicker calluses, use a softener first to safely loosen the skin before removal. After exfoliation, finish with a moisturizing product to prevent dryness and cracking. This is the key to soft and smooth summer feet.

At US Crystal, the CosmoSpa product line includes a Callus Softener, which effectively softens tough calluses and helps remove them gently. It’s especially suitable for managing thickened skin during summer. Both the CosmoSpa Chamomile Wave and JewelSpa lines contain Heel Balms that provide moisturization and soothing effects after exfoliation. With their light texture, they are great for daily care and help prevent dryness and cracking during the summer.

3. UV Protection is Important for the Top of Your Feet

One area we often overlook is the top of our feet. When wearing sandals or slippers, the tops of the feet and toes are directly exposed to the sun, which can lead to irritation, hyperpigmentation, and even sunburn.  Because the skin on the top of the foot is thin and sensitive, sun protection is essential. Before going outside, apply sunscreen carefully on the tops of your feet and toes, just like you would on your face and arms. For extended outdoor activities, it is highly recommended to use waterproof sunscreen.

After sun exposure, the skin on your feet can quickly become dry and sensitive, so it's also important to soothe and moisturize with foot lotion or calming cream. This can help maintain skin elasticity and overall foot health during the summer.

4. Don’t Forget Pedicure Aftercare

Summer often leads to more frequent pedicures due to open shoes and bare feet. But proper foot care should be a top priority.

After gel or color treatments, do not forcibly peel or scratch the polish off—have it removed professionally to avoid nail damage and infection. All tools used (nippers, pushers, files, etc.) should be thoroughly sanitized with alcohol or disinfectant after each use. If sharing tools, strict hygiene practices are even more critical. .

Also, repeated treatments without breaks can stress the nails, so allow at least 2–3 weeks between sessions to give your nails a breather. Keeping pedicures on for extended periods reduces breathability, creating a moist environment where bacteria or fungi can thrive.

5. Give Your Tired Feet a Break with Massage and Moisturization

Feet carry your entire body weight all day especially in the summer with all the heat and sweat. Wearing uncomfortable sandals can make your feet even more tired, swollen, or dry. That’s why it’s important to give them a nightly rest routine with foot cream and massage.

Before bed, apply a generous amount of foot cream and massage gently in circular motions from toes to soles to heels. This helps with circulation and swelling, and if you include your calves, it can even help improve sleep. Dry summer skin tends to crack, and calluses can build up again. Thus, it's important to apply heel balm or rich foot cream twice a day—after showering and before bed—for consistent care.

All US Crystal pedicure products contain shea butter, which provides deep moisturization to dry skin. The Shea Butter Lotion is excellent for managing dry, cracked feet and maintaining soft, hydrated feet after a pedicure.

6. Establishing a Sustainable Weekly Routine

Maintaining healthy feet in the summer isn’t about one-time treatment. It’s about consistency. Make it a habit to wash your feet daily, dry them thoroughly, and moisturize regularly. Exfoliate once or twice a week to keep the skin smooth and prevent buildup.

Rotate your shoes to allow for proper ventilation and keep the inside clean. Incorporate odor prevention into your routine by using foot deodorants or powders.

Showing your feet is not just a style choice, it’s a sign of confidence and the result of a healthy routine. This summer, take care of your feet from heel to toe with the tips above and keep them fresh and healthy. Your feet carry you through every day, now is the time to treat them with the care they deserve. Now, let’s step into summer feeling lighter, fresher, and more confident!
